Road to Wellness 5k

COVID-19 “ The Rona Era”

Today is the 6th annual Road to Wellness 5k. This is my favorite race! I love RTW because it is all in Roxbury, Massachusett. We run through beautiful and historic Roxbury. Roxbury is a predominately African-American community in Boston. With all the gentrification happening, we’ll see how that demographic will change.

Roxbury is the home to Malcolm X, New Edition, and was at the center of Boston Busing. Being an all black community, Roxbury is seen as a negative or unsafe place to visit and live. This race is a USATF certified course the runs through this city and it makes me so happy.

Plus, this event is free and encourages Black and Brown residents and community members to walk/run. It promotes health and wellness. There is something about seeing over 1000 african-americans and other racial minorities running/walking in the community. That is something that is not seen.

Black Girls Run! always show up to this event. This year since it is virtual, we still promoted this event and we have a team. Today, there were groups of people running in Franklin Park and others ran the Road to Wellness course. We were all spread out, in addition to people running in their communities.

I was so happy to see members of my girl gang. We meet members that never post but they showed up and introduce themselves to us.

Today was a Black Joy event from HoodFit, one of the partners of RTW race. After the event, we ran in Franklin Park.

Overall it was such a good running and community day. This is what excites me about running.
