5k Turkey Trot 2025

Era of…WTF…Joy and Resistance

, Thanksgiving. I acknowledge the complexities and genocide associated with this day. It is also a beautiful harvest festival, and for many it’s also a day of Turkey Trotting. For almost 10 years, this has been my Thanksgiving. It’s the one consistent thing I do every year. Afterward, it’s usually a mixed bag — visiting people or staying home, having a big dinner or something small. But the Turkey Trot is my joy.

Over 2,000 people show up to run, celebrate, and sometimes wear costumes. It’s truly a community event. There aren’t medals or a big post-race spread, just collective energy and presence.

The last couple of years, BGR Boston entered and won the best group costume contest. This year, the theme was Black Queen of Hearts with a zodiac sign. I love the idea of Black queens, period. But being me, I didn’t fully follow the assignment. I didn’t want to buy anything from Amazon. I wanted to support a Black-owned business directly.

So I went to Etsy and found a Black woman who makes shirts and other items. The shirt I ordered simply said Queen — plain, simple, powerful. And it’s something I’d actually wear again. In times like these, my money is funny, so I have to be more intentional about how I spend it.

Anyway, the BGR ladies looked amazing. It was so good seeing my running community and just members of the community in general. Part I of the Trot was the shenanigans; Part II was the actual run.

This year, they separated the runners from the walkers, which helped because it can get chaotic. I actually ran. I ran well. I had an 11:09 pace and finished in 33 minutes. That’s a good sign since I’m running a half marathon next week. I wasn’t in pain. I did walk a bit, but I was consistent with my running. It felt really good.

It was also great seeing people I know passing by me, cheering me on — “Keep it up, Tiffany!” I just need to run four more 5Ks, and then I’m set.
