Running along the Mystic

Running along the Mystic

Era of WTF… Joy and Resistance

It’s still week two of training, and I know the key is time on feet. I'm making it a goal to add more of that. Today I planned to run along the Mystic — the mileage plan called for five miles, and I knew I could get that on the Mystic River route. I've run it so many times that I don't even need my Garmin to know the mileage.

Well, to my early morning surprise, there was construction, and my regular route was blocked off. I couldn't go around the river or past the row club. I figured the route toward Charlestown might still be under construction too, so I decided to just run a different way. My goal was to at least get a 5K in.

I went over the bridge and ran past the Medford police station, then through parts of the park. When I turned back toward the Assembly Row shopping area, I checked and saw I'd already completed three miles — I could put in two more.

I ran along the Orange Line, which was shut down for bus service — what a headache — and made my way through East Somerville. More construction there too. But I was happy to see voting reminder signs, Little Free Libraries, and a free health vending machine along the way. It made me happy to see community support and engagement.

5 miles completed.
